Welcome to the Charter Township of Commerce, one of the most sought-after communities to live in southeast Michigan. In 2020 Commerce was named the safest community with a population of 25,000 residents or more in Michigan. Our Police services are provided by contract with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office with 35 Deputies assigned to serve only Commerce Township. Our 33 full-time EMT & Paramedic Firefighters, along with a growing complement of paid on call firefighters, staff four stations 24 hours a day. If you live here and qualify to be a firefighter, we will train and equip you to do so. The paid-on -call firefighters find a rewarding career serving Commerce Township, and many rise to become full time.

Residents benefit from the award-winning Walled Lake Consolidated Schools, with all three high schools located in Commerce Township, as well as the Huron Valley Schools serving our communities. A number of parochial schools like St. Patrick’s, St. Williams, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory, Catholic Central, and St. Catherine’s Siena also is just outside our borders serving many of our residents. Commerce residents enjoy sports, like any small town, supporting the teams of Commerce Township’s Northern High School Knights, Central High School’s Vikings, and Westerns High School’s Warriors, along with Lakeland High Schools Eagles.

Our 1200 acres of township parks are home to youth baseball, softball, soccer, and football. Whether you are an off-road mountain biker, hiker, or you participate in any family outdoor activity, it’s here for your year- round use. Proud Lake State Park is headquartered here adding 4700 more acres for year-round use with three public boat launches across Commerce Township. Commerce Township is partnered with the City of Wixom to open another 5.3 miles of paved bike path traversing Commerce, the City of Walled Lake and the City of Wixom with the Michigan Airline Trail which is an integral part of the State of Michigan’s Lake (Huron) to Lake (Michigan) trail. The Airline Trail connects to the M5 bike path creating an alternate travel to work and shops as well as a spectacular exercise or outdoor experience. The Michigan Airline Trail is a rails to trails project we proudly share and it was purchased and improved using gifts, grants and over $2.2 million donated dollars; nearly no tax dollars.

Our Downtown Development Association is home to a $100 million investment constructing a restaurant filled, entertainment site with retail, and residential planned urban development just south of our Township Hall while still retaining 100 acres of green space and six miles of walking paths open to the public. The Charter Township of Commerce is the gateway to western Oakland County’s Lake filled region. New investment, a business-friendly government, and unparalleled natural assets, establish the Township as an economically healthy, low taxed, sustainable choice community. If we can be of service, please contact us at the Township Hall.
