October is Fall Car Care Month, the perfect time to prep vehicles for the colder months ahead. Commerce Township Community Library offers ChiltonLibrary, a comprehensive source of up-to-date repair, maintenance, and service information for cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs. With 24/7 online access, residents can easily find vehicle manuals, diagnostic details, technical service bulletins, recalls, a labor estimating tool, and more.

Vehicle owners can prepare for fall and winter with these essential tips:

  • Check Fluids: Inspect oil, power steering, brake, transmission, coolant, and washer fluid.
  • Check Belts & Hoses: Look for leaks and ensure belts are secure.
  • Check Battery: Cold weather can drain batteries—inspect for corrosion and test their strength.
  • Check Tires: Ensure at least 4/32″ of tread depth and proper inflation.
  • Check Lights: Confirm headlights and safety markers are functioning.
  • Check Wipers & Deicer: Test defrosters and ensure wipers are in good shape.
  • Check Cooling System: Consult the owner manual or ChiltonLibrary for recommended maintenance intervals. This can vary depending on the manufacturer, and year, make, model, as well as the climate and driving conditions.
  • Check Exhaust System: Inspect for carbon monoxide leaks.
  • Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include jumper cables, a flashlight, blankets, water, nonperishable food, and a first aid kit.

Routine maintenance helps ensure a vehicle’s safety and reliability. Always consult your owner manual or ChiltonLibrary for manufacturer-recommended service guidelines and OEM-tested repair information.
